Jimmi Hendrix, Bon scott of  AC/DC, Sid viscous, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Jim Morrison what is common in these names? Well, no prize for guessing, they are all rock/pop stars and all died young. Some died due to suicide, overdose, addiction and heart attack or what ever the cause may be but rockstars are prone to die young.Rock stars – notorious for their "crash and burn" lifestyles are more likely than other people to die before reaching old age.
A study of more than 1,000 mainly British and North American artists, spanning the era from Elvis Presley to rapper Eminem, found they were two to three times more likely to suffer a premature death than the general population.
Between 1956 and 2005 there were 100 deaths among the 1,064 musicians examined by researchers at the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University.

More than a quarter of all the deaths were related to drugs or alcohol abuse, said the study in the Journal of Epidemial Community Health."The paper clearly describes a population of rock and pop stars who are at a disproportionate risk of alcohol and drug related deaths," said Mark Bellis, lead author of the study. "In the music industry, factors such as stress, changes from popularity to obscurity, and exposure to environments where alcohol and drugs are easily available, can all contribute to substance use as well as other self-destructive behaviors," the report said.

Was Def Leppard right when they philosophized that it was better to burn out than fade away? Live fast die young is what they are famous for. While it may be some bad numerology Karma but most of them died at the age of 27. Here are the list of some who died young:

Elvis Presley: When “The King” was found dead at his bathroom on August 1977 at the age of 42. The doctors said its because of Heartattack but it was obviously due to drugs and sleeping pills. He really was the greatest star of the Rock and roll.

John Lennon: The Beatles front man was shot by Mark Chapman at the age of 40, well he was probably not a drug addict but the world wasn’t the Utopia he imagined.

Jimi Hendrix: The picture of this iconic figure in a deep pink bandana playing the "Star Spangled Banner"at the Woodstock music festival in 1969 remains one of the most enduring images of rock music. The American guitar virtuoso with hits like Purple Haze, Voodoo Child, Foxy Lady was found dead in a London hotel room on September 18, 1970, aged just 27. It is believed that he died in bed after consuming wine and nine Vesperax sleeping pills and then said to have asphyxiated on his own vomit.

Jim Morrison: When this charismatic rock star sang "Come On Baby Light My Fire" with his eyes closed and a shock of curly hair like a halo around his face, thousands sighed and more dreamed of being him. They still do. The singer, poet and filmmaker front man of The Doors is believed to have killed himself with a heroin overdose. Morrison was 27. However, it was later revealed that he had inhaled heroin thinking it was cocaine.

Kurt Cobain: The Nirvana front man also died at 27, though not from an overdose despite being a heroin addict. The official story behind his death was that he had shot himself in the head, although over the years many new theories of murder have surfaced, one of them involving his wife, Courtney Love.

Sid Viscious:We had a death pact, and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots. Goodbye!” on his suicide not, Sid Vicious (born John Simon Ritchie 10 May 1957 – 2 February 1979) was an English musician best known as the bassist of the influential punk rock group Sex Pistols.

Janis Joplin: The wild haired woman with a wide grin and a voice to die for. She was no. 46 on the list of greates stars of all time by Rolling stones, if you are wondering who she was. The one who convinced you that it was okay to ask the Lord to buy you a Mercedes Benz. She was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel in 1970. She had overdosed on heroin and had possibly combined it with alcohol. And oh, yes, Joplin was 27 when she died.

John Bonham: The legendary drummer of Led Zeppelin also died young, at 32. He downed four quadruple vodkas (sixteen shots, amounting to about half of an imperial quart or 565 ml, approximately 2/3 of a fifth of vodka). He then continued to drink heavily when he arrived at the rehearsals. A halt was called to the rehearsals late in the evening and the band retired to Page’s house, The Old Mill House in Clewer, Windsor. After midnight, Bonham had fallen asleep and was taken to bed and placed on his side. He was found dead the next morning.

and also there is that hairy guy called Bob Marley whose death is more suspicious than any of the above mentioned. The zion never was here for this redemption singer…

I have excluded the man who moon-danced the whole world time and again, Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer of all time who died due to unknown reason.

While those who survived:

John Lee Hooker – The blues singer died in 2001 at the age of 83. He was performing right up until his death

Charles ‘Chuck’ Berry – Born in 1926, one of the pioneers of ‘rock and roll’. Still going strong at 81

Richard Penniman – Better known by his stage name Little Richard, the singer started performing in the 1940s. He is now 75.

and will some years letter the list will grow with the names of Lindsey Lohoan. paris Hilton and etc..

Whilst I understand your coverage of but music icons who died young, the expression ‘Live Fast, Die Young and Leave a Good-looking Corpse’ holds almost synonymous to James Dean, an actor who unlike others, only at tender 24, also died young. This, now widely popular phrase, was probabaly first coined in a movie called ‘Knock on Any Door’. Back home in Nepal, I had seen B/W James Dean posters with that phrase plunked in.
